Haiku by Željko Funda : “birds have feathers, lizards have the sun ” haibunnies
In May, 2017, Željko Funda, kindly presented his haiku book “birds have feathers, lizards have the sun ” haibunnies to me.
Željko Funda is also one of the authors who kindly and delightedly sent his nice haiku to the World Haiku Series 2019.
Firstly, let me show you a few pages of his book, with Japanese translations of haiku put here.
1. Spring
an orchard
butterflies and petals
flying together
Everything wakes up in spring, but without any alarm clock.
she
her smiles disappearing
with a butterfly
“A smile is like a butterfly: you take a look and it’s already gone”, says grannie.

2. Summer
returning home
a firefly throwing light
upon my way
One firefly is not enough for reading if it’s not fat enough.
a clear night
a firefly disappearing
in the Moon
You can’t turn off a firefly because throwing light is its job.
3. Autmn
silence in the woods
a beech leaf falling here
an oak leaf there
Once a leaf stroke my face. It didn’t hurt because it was a bloodless crash.
October
down the hero’s bronze face
rain pouring
Sometimes rain washes the world for one day, sometimes for two days, and sometimes it likes its job so much that it can’t stop.
4. Winter
winter morning
all among snowflakes
wishes and greetings
Christmas warms up, but only in your heart.
March
the first snowdrops disappearing
in snow
Snow can’t do any harm to snowdrops because they are snow flowers.

5. Animals
time to rest
with a ladybird on his back
the dog enters his house
Dog is a good guard, but not from mosquitos.

a snail is almost reaching
the top of a cross
Snail has two feelers, but they are not for feeling, they are for looking.

6 Sea, Things, Silence
a night train
the carriage windows throwing light
on the graveyard crosses
“Dead people live in us”, says grannie. “Even if we’re sleeping?” asks grandpa. “Then they are taking a rest from us”, says grannie.

leaves falling
through silence
My ears hurt because of silence. I get focused to hear something, and nothing shows up.
